More Power to the People: UK Families to Gain Greater Choice in Home Energy Upgrades
As energy costs remain a concern for households across the UK, a new government initiative is making it easier — and more affordable — for families to futureproof their homes.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has announced major updates to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, part of its wider Warm Homes Plan, which is set to deliver a boost of £1.5 billion to help households make energy-saving improvements.
What’s New?
Previously focused on offering grants for air-source and ground-source heat pumps, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is now expanding to give families more flexibility and more options.
Here’s what’s changing:
- More choices for heating systems: Air-to-air heat pumps and heat batteries will now be eligible under the scheme, helping families with smaller homes or lower energy usage to find suitable options.
- Flexible finance: New leasing models and long-term payment options will allow more households — especially those without upfront capital — to take part in the green transition.
- Workforce boost: Up to 18,000 new trainees will be supported to enter the green heating sector, improving access to installers and reducing waiting times for upgrades.
Why It Matters
Energy bills have soared in recent years, and while many want to make their homes greener, the upfront cost of upgrading heating systems can be a major barrier. By expanding the scheme and supporting more financing options, the government is helping families reduce their carbon footprints — and their monthly bills — without the need for big up-front investments.
It’s also a move toward the UK’s net zero ambitions. Domestic heating currently accounts for about 17% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. Heat pumps and other low-carbon technologies can make a substantial impact in tackling that.
Who Can Benefit?
Homeowners across England and Wales can apply for support through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Grants of up to £7,500 are available to help cover installation costs. Whether you’re retrofitting an old property or looking to make a new home more efficient, these changes make low-carbon living more accessible than ever.
If you’re thinking of upgrading your boiler, improving your insulation, or switching to a heat pump — now might be the ideal time to explore your options.
